HistoryFleckney Baptist Church, although a modern building, has been around for nearly 200 years. The Baptists started meeting in Fleckney in 1811 and the first chapel was built in 1813. This was subsequently rebuilt in 1897 to accommodate a growing congregation. Unfortunately, in 1990 the old chapel was declared unsafe due to dry rot. It was demolished in 2000. The current church building opened in 2002. The name stones from the old chapel can be seen in the brickwork on the front of the new building. When the church first started in 1811, baptisms were conducted in the brook. We are a bit more sophisticated these days and have a covered baptismal pool in the centre of the building that can be warmed to a more comfortable temperature! A lot of the church activities have been around a long time:
The wall at the front of the new building was painted for us by the son of a church member. It is a very visual reminder of all the names of the Lord. |
